Circle Lenses

Circle Lenses in the News

In our Circle Lenses in the News section we try to provide our visitors with objective articles that address both the popularity and safety of circle lens contacts.  We feature articles from reputable media sources that advise caution when ordering circle lenses online and articles or videos from makeup forums that are proponents of circle lenses.  Circle-Lenses.net advises caution but also offers that US media sources may not be 100% objective but rather influenced by US policies around prescription contact lenses which some experts postulate is more about subsidizing US eye care providers vice actual safety.  We try to offer enough relevant news for our visitors to make up their own minds.

New York Times Circle Lenses Review

The New York Times reviews Circle Lenses

The story of this article, "What Big Eyes You Have, Dear, but Are Those Contacts Risky?",  says it all so it won't be surprising to learn that a conservative paper such as The NY Times preaches caution about this new contact lens fashion.

Like many other US articles discussing the circle lens craze this article references the impact Lady Gaga and her Bad Romance music video has had on accelerating this already popular and cool cosmetic contact lenses trend.

Although the article quotes several US professionals either in the medical field or the FDA urging young women not to order circle lenses online the article also quotes several young girls that say they became less concerned about circle lens safety when they found out how many of their high school or college peers were already wearing circle contact lenses.

The Times cites Michelle Phan's, Lady Gaga Circle Lens video, as one of

ABC News Circle Lenses Review

Circle Lenses Brown EyesABC News reviews Circle Lenses contacts

Similar to the NY Times review on Circle Lenses summarized for comments elsewhere on Circle-Lenses.net ABC News toes the party line and quotes others in the US medical profession that claim Circle Lenses can be dangerous and cause infection.  But reading the quote... "Like any contact lens, prolonged wear can lead to infections that, although rare, can be serious, experts said. If the contacts don't fit properly -- too tight or too loose -- they can scratch the cornea, which can cause vision problems." it clearly says "like any contact lens".  ABC news doesn't go out on a limb to say Circle Lenses are any more likely to lead to infection than normal contact lenses.

In fact they quote a young woman who tells over her good experience with circle lenses and her claim that she discussed waring circle lense with a doctor and that they have the same risks as regular contact lenses...  'I've Had a Really Pleasant Experience' said Kristin Rowland, 22, she's been wearing the lenses for a year but said she consulted with a doctor first.   "I like that cartoonish big-eye look, my friends

Circle Lenses and mainstream media

The Slate discusses the establishment's status quo take on Circle Lenses and rips The NY Times.

Although we think Circle Lenses and other cosmetic contact lenses are cool and we know hundreds of thousands of woman throughout the globe wear them daily we still try to be impartial and advise caution because your eyes are precious.  You can see from the other articles in this section we do feature and link to articles from US big media that advise against buying circle lenses online.  In researching circle lenses in traditional media outlets in the United States we found that just about every major magazine, newspaper, media website has done a story about circle lens contact lenses.  Almost every one of these stories of course mentions Lady Gaga, almost as if Circle Lenses didn't exist before the bad romance video, and probably for most mainstream American media people of genration X and Y they probably didn't know what a Circle Lens was before that video so it's understandable.  The other common and disappointing aspect of all of these stories is they all say the same basic thing.  Circle lenses are larger than regular contact lenses, they are contraband in the United States and girls should stay away from them because of potential dangers.  None of these media sources bothers to take the time to dig any deepCircle Lenses Brown Eyeser and maybe contact 100 wearers of circle lenses and see if any have health issues.  None of them of course go out on a limb and ask the question... "Are circle lenses any more dangerous than regular contact lenses".  None challenge the fact that because they were not invented in the US maybe that's the reason they are considered contraband.  It's so predictable it's pathetic and it's like one lobbyist for US based contact lenses companies, yes there are lobbyist for contact lenses (it's a big business), wrote a sample article and each major outlet tweaked it and called it there only.

And then just when boredom and redundancy had turned to the point of pain and almost tears we found this gem of an article from Slate questioning main stream media, the NY times in particular.  The article they rip was one we had already reviewed on this site and although we more or less agree with Slate we'll leave it so that you the reader can make up your own mind.  Although the Slate article (I'm a new fan) cites Circle Lenses in it's title and is the trigger for this particular article it's more of a condemnation on big media just going along with the robot flow and not reporting, not asking questions, not representing both sides of the story, just the expected, routine position, you know the outcome of these articles before you even read them.  They are page fillers rather than newsworthy stories. The slate picked on the NY times for this article but their concise on track position could be pointed at any if not all of big boring US media.  Meat is bad for you, coffee is bad for you then it's good for you.  Alcohol is bad but red wine is good.  There is global warming there isn't.  Basically they just echo popular opinion and change when opinion changes rather than reporting and investigating facts.  Sure the above was a rant but the Slate go me going so I'll apologize now to anyone still reading at this point.

Speaking of points... my point is,

Circle Lenses more than 30% of contact lenses market in Korea

Bausch & Lomb says Circle Lenses more than 30% of contact lenses market in Korea.

This article written way back in 2010 discusses Baush & Lomb considering entering the circle lenses market in Korea if they could satisfy safety concerns.  They had originally said they would not produce circle lenses but may have reconsidered due to the growth and popularity of these fashion contact lenses.

Baush & Lomb was once the number one contact lens maker in Korea but fell to number 2 when Johnson & Johnson introduced Acuvue disposable contacts to the region.  Baush & Lomb cited the huge 30% and growing market share of Korea circle lenses as the reason to review their contact lens strategy in this key market.

Circle-lenses.net will do some research and determine Baush & Lomb's current position on Circle Lenses in Korea.

Anti Circle Lenses American Propaganda

Yet another example of misinformed anti circle lenses propaganda from America

This is a must read article for anyone with half a brain wondering how all these Asian girls have been wearing circle lenses for years and yet to have gone blind.  It's good to be cautions with your eyes and we strongly recommend you do your research on circle lenses before you buy but if you're also wondering how the KFDA can approve circle lenses if they are so dangerous you should continue reading.  It's not the actual article in this case that's worth the time it's the great comments slamming the American author of the Circle Lenses fad article.Circle Lenses Dangerous or Propaganda

The article is typical of big American media which are typically written by overweight middle age white males that probably has never seen an actual live woman wearing circle lenses and probably has only heard of them in passing.  It appears they then do less than 15 minutes of Internet research, of course incorrectly mention Lady Gaga as the sole source of circle lenses popularity in the US and they get half the facts wrong and write a very dispassionate piece about a topic that is a very important to those in the know.

Here's a snippet of Mr. MD's weak attempt at warning parents against the dangers of circle lenses...

circle lenses are available on the internet without a prescription, even though they are illegal in the United States.  Where do they come from? Most are ordered from online stores based in Canada and Asia, where circle lenses have been popular for some time, but are made with little or no regulation.

Ok, so we'll concede the first fragment is accurate.  It is very easy to buy circle lenses and even normal color contacts without a prescription and yes it's illegal to sell them if the seller is based in the US but it IS legal to buy circle lenses online if you live in the United States.  We recommend caution when buying any contact lenses online and suggest a visit to your doctor for a valid prescription and fitting but if you already know your prescription and it's expired or if you just want to try plano circle lenses you aren't risking your health provided you be responsible and use common sense.

Now as far as the second sentence goes we, like those commenting on the original article have issue with these statements.  We've spent hours and hours researching circle lenses facts and while their may be online stores based in Canada it's certainly not a major source of circle lenses

Circle Lenses Make Eyes Appear Larger

Circle Lenses Make Eyes Appear Larger... but are they safe?

Another one of the typical Gaga Circle Lenses articles but for some reason it was new and we liked the photo so we thought we'd provide the link for yet one more Lady Gaga is responsible for the circle lenses craze in the US.  If you've read the other articles on this site about circle lenses and Lady Gaga you'd know what we think about that.

And yes this article also says that circle lenses are not safe, we'll let you decide on your own.

“Circle lenses” are special colored contacts imported from Asia that make the eyes appear larger because they cover both the iris and part of the whites.

Even though it has been illegal to sell contacts without a prescription in the United States since 2005, it is still possible to obtain the lenses. Manufacturers in Asia that make the lenses sell them online for around $20 to $30 per pack, and with the wide variety of colors that the sites offer, the lenses are only made more attractive to potential buyers.

circle lenses for big pretty dolly eyes!

circle lenses for big pretty dolly eyes!

A post from a circle lens hawker wannabe with a decent circle lenses before and after photo so we thought we'd giver her the credit and send a link over to Girlynation.com and give Christina a boost?   Does she say she's wears Circle Lenses or is she just a spoofer?  Ask her if Circle Lenses contacts are approved by the KDFA?   If she doesn't know what the KDFA is and why they care about circle lenses then you should be weary to take any advice about these larger than normal contacts.
